HELMEPA, with the wholehearted support of independent charity Lloyd’s Register Foundation - LRF (the Foundation), has carried out awareness raising programs primarily aimed at schoolchildren, but also the wider society.

LRF ( is a charitable foundation of the Lloyd’s Register Group, which is one of the oldest Associate Members of HELMEPA. The mission of LRF is to secure for the benefit of the community high technical standards of design, manufacture, construction, maintenance, operation and performance for the purpose of enhancing the safety of life and property at sea and on land and in the air. Also, the advancement of public education including within the transportation industries and any other engineering and technological disciplines.

The Foundation offered in 2008, for the first time, its financial support to HELMEPA towards expanding the “HELMEPA Junior” program ( during the period 2008-2011. As a result, the number of children participating annually was increased to 4,000, the program’s Action Plan was enriched with new activities and experiments, its website was translated into English and a new category of members was established, “HELMEPA Cadets”, for youth above the age of 13.

The Foundation’s support continued through the financing of HELMEPA’s 3 year-long “Marine Environment and Science Awareness Campaign” carried out in 12 cities/areas of Greece between 2011 and 2014. In the framework of the Campaign 13,500 schoolchildren and 1,000 teachers were transported to a specially designed environmental exhibition, with all transportation costs covered by the Campaign. During school visits, HELMEPA’s scientific staff presented to the schoolchildren the exhibition’s thematic content. At the end of each visit, schoolchildren and teachers completed a questionnaire regarding environmental issues and this data was processed by HELMEPA. Also, schoolchildren in each area took part in voluntary environmental activities. A brief overview of the Campaign’s results can be found here.
