HELMEPA Online Workshop “Safety at Sea for the Fishing Sector”

With the participation of 60 professional and amateur fishermen, representatives of Port Authorities and companies/organizations in Greece and Cyprus, HELMEPA’s online Workshop on “Safety at Sea for the Fishing Sector” was carried out yesterday, November 5th, in collaboration with CYMEPA and the fishing academy ‘Enaleia’.

The Workshop is part of the three year-long (2019-2022) Project titled “Enhancing the Understanding of New and Enduring Challenges in Maritime Safety Culture in the Eastern Mediterranean” implemented by HELMEPA in collaboration with Associate Corporate Members Hellenic Lloyds and DYNAMARINe in Greece and sister association CYMEPA in Cyprus, with the kind support of Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF)*.

Welcoming the participants on behalf of HELMEPA, Assistant Coordinator Mr. C. Triantafyllou outlined the objectives and activities of the Project and presented statistics from recent studies conducted by LRF and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on safety during fishing operations. Following, Mr. M. Crossman, President of the Amorgos Fishing Cooperative, pointed out key safety issues before and during fishing activities, while Mr. L. Makris, Hellenic Lloyd’s Inspector, spoke about the close relationship between personal attitude and behavior regarding safety and accident prevention at sea. Professor of Marine Meteorology, Dr. N. Mazarakis, gave the participants practical advice on the correct and timely forecast through new technologies as well as tips on avoiding weather traps, while the Workshop came to a close with a presentation by Lieutenant Commander I. Nikolaou, Hellenic Coast-Guard and Officer of the Hellenic Bureau for Marine Casualties Investigation, on “lessons learned” from the investigation and study of safety incidents on fishing boats.

The presentations of the distinguished speakers and their replies to questions raised highlighted important contributing factors to fishing vessel accidents such as insufficient training of crews and non-compliance with basic safety principles, lack of safety equipment on board and failure to make use of new technologies. Workshop participants voluntarily committed to support the goals of the Project as HELMEPA “Safety Ambassadors” by promoting the enhancement of Maritime Safety Culture in their local communities and the wider region in which they operate.

On this occasion, HELMEPA would like to wholeheartedly thank Lloyd’s Register Foundation for financially supporting the Project as well as Partners CYMEPA, Dynamarine and Hellenic Lloyd’s for their valuable cooperation!
