In June 2006
Four MEPAs signed, as founding members, the legal document which set-up INTERMEPA as a voluntary, non-governmental and non-profit association in Athens, Greece.
Its headquarters are hosted at HELMEPA’s offices, which provides secretarial support.

Expansion of the MEPA Spirit
According to the Founding Declaration of 1982, the Association should lead in an international effort to combine regulation and voluntary will to eliminate ship-generated marine pollution and improve safety at sea. Implementing this Article, the Association promoted and supported the establishment of the following sister Organizations, which operate as non-profit NGOs under similar to HELMEPA’s Constitution:
