Publications and Productions

In order for the voluntary information and education offered by the Maritime Training Center to be effective in motivating the human element of the Greek shipping community, codified bilingual publications and other audiovisual material are made available as training aids.

 

Publications, check-list placards, posters, leaflets, CDs and DVDs, related to regulations governing safe and environmentally friendly operation of vessels have been produced and widely disseminated by the Maritime Training Center. Most of the publications contain questions and answers so that they can be used as aids to companies and vessels for onboard training and the evaluation of the level of knowledge.

 

Displayed hereunder are productions which can be found on HELMEPA Member Vessels and/or Member Companies ashore.

An electronic publication that HELMEPA revised with AMSA’s collaboration, so that it may constitute an important aid to merchant navy officers of Member vessels traveling to Australia and sailing near the Great Barrier Reef.

HELMEPA’s Guide on US Coast Guard Port State Control Examinations

This codified bilingual publication, featuring the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) Guidelines to its inspectors for the examination of various parts of the vessel with respect to Maritime Safety, Environmental Protection and Security in English, is addressed to member-vessels trading in US waters.

 

This Guide is a “tool” not only for preparing for examinations but also for the maintenance of ships and their crews at that high level that both today’s and the future’s quality shipping demands.

 

Τhe Guide was met with a positive reception by members, who asked for more copies. The Board of Directors decided that HELMEPA make the publication available to each of its member-companies only in CD format, which can be reproduced and so distributed within each company according to its own demands.

DVD – 2013 REFRESHER TRAINING ONBOARD

In continuing its efforts to update seafarer knowledge in new and effective ways and in the context of Refresher Training Onboard, HELMEPA has made available for the first time in DVD format, a series of lectures on topics pertinent to the environmentally sound operation of a ship. The DVD features lectures on:

  • Oil-Water Separating Equipment – proper use and maintenance
  • Marine Litter – Annex V of MARPOL
  • Ballast Water Management – impacts and prevention measures

 

These 15 minute presentations are given by expert HELMEPA staff in English (with English subtitles also) and were developed in close consultation with the Association’s Training Committee.

 The DVD is available gratis to HELMEPA member-vessels.

E-publication – “Α Guide for Seafarers on Ships in Australian Waters”

Available exclusively in electronic format and published in English, this guide serves as an efficient means of refreshing Greek and foreign officer knowledge on the requirements of both IMO and of Australian legislation for ships transiting Australian waters. Produced in collaboration with AUSMEPA and AMSA, the intention is also that it will facilitate the effective cooperation between ships and AMSA to help achieve safe navigation and pollution prevention in the particularly sensitive marine areas of this vast continent.

 

It offers information pertinent to ship tracking and reporting systems, navigation in the inner routes of the Great Barrier Reef, ballast water management, biofouling and the permissible draught of ships in Torres Strait. This e-publication is available gratis to HELMEPA members.

Important Reminders for your Own Safety

A pocket guide for seafarers to remind them that “safety regulations on board save lives and protect the seas from pollution”. An update of the 2011 edition, it details the checks that need to be made by Officers on board prior to every port inspection across the following key maintenance and operational areas; fire-fighting, load lines, safety of navigation, ISM Code-safe operation of the vessel, Structural Safety, Lifesaving appliances, Radiocommunications, Main and Auxiliary Engines, Emergency Systems and Procedures, Prevention of Pollution by Sewage, Ship’s Plans and Documents, Oil-Water Separator.

HELMEPA’s latest publication aims at equipping seafarers on board the Association’s member vessels with a valuable reference tool. Officers may now look to this up-to-date resource to swiftly and effectively pinpoint any issues pertinent to the environmentally sound management of a ship; issues that are delineated not only by MARPOL 73/78, but by other legislation relevant to ballast water, harmful antifouling systems, recycling of ships, underwater noise and ship strikes with marine mammals.It is printed in both Greek and English and is also available in CD format.

Guide for Greek Seafarers in Australian Waters

In cooperation with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority – AMSA, the publication titled “Α Guide for the Greek Seafarers in Australian Waters” was revised and enriched.This Guide describes the ship reporting procedures prior to and during the voyage in the Australian waters and the most important requirements for the protection of the marine environment placing emphasis on the management of ballast water management and biofouling.

2008 English Edition prepared together with GL, 1993 English Edition, 1992 Greek Edition

In accordance with Resolution A680(17) of IMO, the “Ship’s Manual”  with useful Guidelines for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Operation of the Ship was produced and both publications were revised in 1995. It also contained a wide range of check-lists on important operations.During 2007, the Maritime Training Center in cooperation with Germanischer Lloyd AG, Associate Member of HELMEPA, prepared in English a most updated version of the “SHIP’S MANUAL” with the addition of guidance for managing ballast water, controlling air emissions and preparing for Port State Control vessel’s inspection.Germanischer Lloyd kindly financed the printing of this important publication, which they presented jointly with HELMEPA to the Piraeus maritime community on 4th February 2008.

Constructed in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard, this publication lists all requirements of inspections by USCG on foreign-flag tanker and freight vessels visiting US ports. To prepare to comply with the listed requirements, relevant aids of IMO, ILO, USCG and HELMEPA are also shown under each requirement.

This publication in English was published for and financed by the European Commission on the occasion of the European Year of the Environment. The EC Delegation presented and disseminated the publication to all National Delegations at the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO.

Guide Against Ship-Generated Pollution

This was the first publication printed in April 1983. Written in Greek, it was illustrated gratis by the artist Stavros Georgiadis, who later also designed HELMEPA’s Seagull and the TV cartoon spots.  The publication was disseminated to all HELMEPA Members.
